When it was realized that societies could also 'get sick' during and after the Second World War, the criterion of adaptation to society in the definition of 'normality' was gradually abandoned and a more flexible middle ground was found in which normality was defined as a process. And then we entered an age where it did not make much sense to say that what is happening should not happen.
