Roman İstanbul'dan Ankara'ya uzanır; Ankara'yı, Ankara'nın özelinde bir Yahudi mahallesini ve bu mahalledeki bir Yahudi evini, pansiyonunu anlatmaya koyulur. Romanın ve pansiyonun odağı İstanbul'dan gelme Semiha, elli beşinde Jozef (Yasef ) Tudela ve Jozef Tudela'nın ondan daha yaşlı görünen karısı Rebeka Tudela'dır.Son Telgraf 'ta tefrika edilen romanın adı Gece Olmadan'dır. Ancak daha sonra yazar, kendi el yazısıyla tefrika üzerine yaptığı düzenlemelerde romanın adını Her Şey Bitmeden olarak değiştirir. Romanın her iki ismi de, romanın sayfaları arasında, peş peşe yer alır: (Jozef Tudela), nihayet ölümden evvel ve tamamıyla ihtiyar olmadan, her şey bitmeden, gece olmadan evvel aşkı tadacaktı. Hiç değilse ıstıraplarıyla, henüz ıstırap çekmeye takati varken tadacaktı.
