Mary Shelley Classic Novels Editorial Review
The Last Man by Mary Shelley is a beautifully written exploration of human nature and society. Set in the future, the novel explores what is important to us when we lose our world, society, community, family, and friends until we are left alone in the world. Shelley masterfully examines the core nature of human society and its weaknesses through the development of characters such as Lionel Kersey, Adrian, Lord Raymond, and Idris. It is written in poetic Prose, which adds to its appeal. However, the book is a game of two halves, and the first half is quite a slog, with gushing romantic Prose and confusing character relationships. The second half is unrelentingly morbid and dark, which can be daunting, but its exploration of themes and ideas is delivered with great acuity. The Last Man is an excellent example of Romantic period writing.
