The Penguin Classics edition of War and Peace is a masterpiece, loved by readers of all ages. The book has a slow start, but ultimately Tolstoy's ability to show the inner spirit of his characters, beautifully and compellingly, makes it a book for all. It's a Russian epic and can't be rushed. The development of character is so beautiful, it's hard to believe. For instance, Pierre goes from an Napoleon-obsessed buffoon to become someone hoping for a chance at assassinating him. Tolstoy's philosophy is beloved by some and disregarded by others. Some readers find the "side-track stories" very important to the understanding of the content. Others disagree. Some readers love the length of the book and find it necessary to savor. Others find it tedious and criticize it for being verbose. Overall, War and Peace is an enduring classic that should be read and enjoyed by everyone.
