The WEN 4214 12-Inch Variable Speed Drill Press is well-designed and made and features a variable speed transmission with digital readout, laser alignment, and work light. The assembly is relatively easy, and the drill itself performs great. It is also worth noting that the drill does not come pre-assembled; however, this is a plus for older customers and those with back issues. Despite some lost motion between the forward drive pulley and the chuck, the drill itself is a great machine. However, it should be noted that some customers' machines had problems with the worm gear jumping teeth on the rack when lowering the table, making the movement jerky. Additionally, some found the motor RPM did not match the spec sheet. In terms of safety features, there is no guard, but buyers can read up on drill press safety. The drill can be assembled by one person and is a spot-on machine from startup. The only notable flaw is that the drill caught fire during setup in one instance.
