What is Saint Andre cheese and how is it made?

Saint Andre is a creamy French triple-cream cheese renowned for its rich texture and buttery flavor. It's crafted from cow's milk using traditional cheese-making methods that include adding extra cream to the milk. This process results in a soft cheese with a velvety mouthfeel, making it an ideal pairing for fruits, crackers, or even on a cheese board for entertaining guests.

What does Saint Andre cheese taste like?

Saint Andre features a delicate balance of creaminess and a mild, slightly sweet flavor, with hints of mushroom and hazelnut. The cheese's soft, white rind adds a slightly earthy element to its taste. Its nuanced flavors make it a delightful addition to any cheese platter or served alongside fresh fruits, charcuterie, or crusty bread.

How should I store Saint Andre cheese?

To maintain its freshness and flavor, Saint Andre cheese should be stored in the refrigerator wrapped in parchment paper or cheese paper, and then placed inside an airtight container. This allows the cheese to breathe while preventing it from drying out or absorbing other odors from the fridge. When ready to serve, let it come to room temperature for optimal flavor and texture.

What foods pair well with Saint Andre cheese?

Saint Andre pairs beautifully with a variety of foods, including fresh fruits like pears and figs, nuts such as almonds or walnuts, and artisan bread. It also works well with sweet jams or chutneys, which complement its creamy profile. Pairing it with a glass of Chardonnay or Champagne can elevate your tasting experience and make for a delightful gastronomic adventure.

Is Saint Andre cheese suitable for cooking?

While Saint Andre is primarily enjoyed as a table cheese, it can also be used in light cooking. Its creaminess melts beautifully, making it a fantastic addition to sauces or toppings for dishes like pasta and risotto. Just remember, it is best used in dishes where you want to enhance creaminess without overpowering other flavors.

What makes Saint Andre cheese different from other cheeses?

Saint Andre stands out due to its triple-cream classification which indicates a higher butterfat content than standard cheese. This results in an exceptionally rich and creamy texture that is unique among cheeses. Unlike traditional Brie or Camembert, Saint Andre offers an even more indulgent taste, appealing to those seeking a luxurious cheese experience.

Can I eat the rind of Saint Andre cheese?

Yes, the rind of Saint Andre cheese is edible and adds textural contrast and flavor to the creamy interior. The rind is gentle and contributes earthy notes that can enhance the overall tasting experience. When serving, you may choose to include the rind for a fuller flavor profile, especially in a cheese platter where various textures and tastes are desired.

How long does Saint Andre cheese last?

When properly stored in the refrigerator, Saint Andre cheese can last up to two weeks after opening. Its quality may deteriorate gradually, so it's best to consume it within this time frame for optimal flavor and texture. Keep an eye on the cheese for any signs of spoilage, such as unusual odors or excessive moisture.

What is the best way to serve Saint Andre cheese?

The best way to serve Saint Andre cheese is by slicing it into wedges or cubes and arranging it on a cheese platter alongside complementary items like fruits, nuts, and cured meats. Pairing it with a selection of crackers or a rustic bread will enhance your guests' tasting experience. Remember to allow the cheese to soften to room temperature before serving to bring out its delicious flavors.
